Active Fire Management System
AFMS
SkyShield’s Active Fire Management System (AFMS) is an advanced, self-contained fire protection solution installed directly inside Unit Load Devices (ULDs). Designed to address the growing threat of lithium-ion battery fires, AFMS integrates rapid smoke detection, autonomous suppression, and real-time alerting. By managing fires at the container level—before they spread to the aircraft—AFMS provides faster response, reduces operational risk, and enhances overall flight safety.

Core Functionality
Quick Detection
AFMS features quick smoke detection using multi-sensor technology, enabling it to identify fire conditions within seconds of ignition.
Automatic Suppression
Upon detection, AFMS automatically deploys a non-toxic suppression agent to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading.
Rapid Notification
AFMS enhances aircraft alerting by rapidly triggering notifications through existing onboard systems.
Features
AFMS uses advanced multi-sensor detection to quickly identify smoke, heat, and aerosol signatures inside the ULD.
AFMS ensures reliable suppression by guaranteeing automatic agent deployment whenever fire conditions are detected.
AFMS features phased suppression, releasing agent in controlled stages to manage persistent fires and extend protection over time.
AFMS includes smart diagnostics and can be easily updated or configured in the field to ensure ongoing readiness and adaptability.
AFMS features a hot-swappable battery design, allowing quick, tool-free servicing without removing the unit from the container.
AFMS uses a lockable mounting system that securely attaches to the ULD while allowing for fast, tool-free removal when needed.
ULD Fire Modeling Framework (UFMF)
The ULD methodology for evaluating fire behavior, detection performance, and suppression effectiveness inside air cargo containers. Developed to address the unique risks posed by lithium-ion battery fires, the UFMF combines physical testing with advanced computer simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) to model a wide range of realistic scenarios. The framework standardizes key variables—such as ULD construction, fire load, ventilation, and sensor type—and is designed to identify the optimal sensor placement and orientation for fastest detection. UFMF enables data-driven development, regulatory alignment, and safer, more effective fire protection systems.

UL 5810 Technical Committee Member
SkyShield is a proud member of the UL 5810 Technical Committee for Active Fire Suppression in Air Cargo, contributing our expertise to the development of performance-based standards that improve cargo fire safety across the aviation industry. As active participants, we bring insight from our ULD Fire Modeling Framework and lithium battery fire simulations to help shape testing protocols, detection requirements, and system evaluation methods. Our involvement ensures that emerging technologies like container-integrated suppression systems are accurately represented and that regulatory frameworks evolve to reflect real-world risks and capabilities.
